My bantys are flying over the fence and wreaking havok in the neighborhood, and I guess I've decided they would prefer the indignity of having a wing clipped over being shut up 24/7. Have any of you done this? I did a little online research, quite horrified to find they could bleed to death from a bad clip! is this true?!?!
Helpful hints, friendly warnings welcome! Thanks!

Re: Clipping wings
Wed, November 29, 2006 - 10:39 PMI don't know if you've already clipped them, but I took mine to the vet to get clipped when we moved to a smaller area. i think they may do it at the humane society too.. Maybe you could take one in and have the vet show you how they do it, because yes, they could definawoutely bleed to death if done wrong. An alternative would be to at 3 feet of chicken wire to the tops of your fences.. I had to do this around my vegetable garden a few times. -

Re: Clipping wings
Thu, November 30, 2006 - 11:49 AMhey, thanks Nicole, the clipping went very well and problem solved. I did have instructions about what to do if you hit a live one, it is icky but I'll share if you wish.
**beginning of icky part**
basically you need a pair of pliers to pull the bleeding quill out completely, thus removing the opening... and then apply pressure to the wound at the skin where the quill was attached. I would be interested to hear if anyone has had to deal with this event!

Re: Clipping wings
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 12:47 PMi ve clipped wings on occasion. all i do is cut the tips off of all the feathers on one wing. starting with feathers close to body. then just go length of wing ending with the last feathers. the last feathers are usually missing abot one third off the length. the first feathers only missing an inch or so. its important to do only one wing or else some of the lighter breeds like bantys can leard to fly with smaller wings. by doing only one they are never balanced, they cant fly unbalanced. theres no blood involved in this way.
