Hi!
I'm Nicole, I have been raising chickens since I was 4 years old.. always for eggs and as pets.. I don't have chickens right now, but I have plenty of funny stories and advice if anyone is interested.. My favorites to raise were always Auracanas for their easter eggs and heartiness... They have always been very smart chickens, plus they were really good at scaring the cats and dogs away from them even as chicks. I also like to raise Barred Plymoth Rocks for their laying capabilities and just how sweet they are. The last chicken I had was a Barred Plymoth Rock named Matika.. she loved eating spiders and would great my car as I pulled up to the driveway. I am waitinhg to have a better housing situation before I try raising chickens again, but in the meantime I can always visit my sister's little red hen Valerie..

Re: New chicken-lady to the site saying hi
Thu, September 14, 2006 - 9:31 AMhi Nicole!
I am really interested in breed personalities, as a relatively new chicken husbander. I love my Rhode Island Red, she is so smart and brave and friendly. my new bantys are kind of a pain, we call them chickenzillas for their otherworldly shrieking and destructive capabilities.
it would be fun to try Aurucanas sometime, I like the breeds with a minimum of drama. is Valerie a Rhodie? -

Sun, October 8, 2006 - 12:25 PMMe, too. I am interested in nice, friendly, maybe even pettable chickens.
I have Blue Andalusian that seem to be very aggresive and mean.
I also have brama Banties that are funny and dopy. Not too much trouble.
And quiet, nice Black Astralorpes.
I would love a beautiful and colorful rooster that isn't so mean.
What other types of chickens have you raised?
All mine are free range in my big back yard. 1/4 acher.
Thus needing for them to be social. -

Wed, November 29, 2006 - 10:08 PMNot too many that I could identify, I raised a lot of mystery chickens that i got at the feed store.. many different mixes.. Bantams are funny and tiny.. I had a very colorful one, a rooster that thought he was much bigger than he was, he would scuttle around with his little bell bottoms and make angry noises at anyone who came near his giant (proportionately) women. He was the only Bantam we had, everyone else was a mystery chicken. It was pretty funny to see him try to mount his big ladies.. Auracanas are still my favorite.. maybe not the friendliest, but definatly the smartest. I had a couple of Auracana roosters, that were fairly nice.. plus if you are going for color those irridescent feathers are beautiful! However, if you want to go for sweetness, the barred plymoth rock are it.

Wed, November 29, 2006 - 10:29 PMI never had much luck with the Rhode Island Reds, they always seemed more aggresive than others. However, Valerie is fairly sweet.. she is red, but I think she's a mix due to her size. She's smart and fairly sociable, whenever we are eating outside she will beg for scraps and want to cuddle. Mixes are great, they always end up being of moderate temperment, and kind of a social grab-bag... You will always get a very notable personality. But like I said, the Barred Plymoth Rock are ridiculously sweet and kind, I highly recommend them.. however not at the highest for brains but great if you want them to socialize with others.
hee, "chickenzillas"... I've definately had a few of those.. I had a rooster (it was raised by someone else and then given to us) that was so nasty that it chased me up a tree when I was 13.. he was really loud and had no respect for the family, he would herd the chickens straight into the part of the garden they weren't supposed to be in, and then challenge us if we tried to shoo him out! He menaced the cats and even the goats didn't like being around him.. he even mounted the hens so often that he pulled out all their back feathers.. after he assaulted the family members enough we gave him to the Humane society with a warning.. I had never given another chicken away before or even after that.

Mon, February 19, 2007 - 12:58 PMif you are looking for more docile breeds generally speaking the asiatic breeds such as brahma langshans in my experiance have proven to be so. the only exception ive encountered is the cochins, but not always. wyndottes have always been good for me. another of my favorites is the hamburgs, very industrius little birds great layers. and they are very pretty. they are good at flying though.

Wed, May 28, 2008 - 11:05 AMI'm new to this, getting 3 "rescues" last fall. @ are Auracanas, one lays the prettiest green eggs, the other lays beige. The 3rd rescue is a black barred and she is very docile, unless you are a checken... She rules the roost!
Then last month I rescued a chick that I am sure is a RhodeIsland Red. She is already taller than the other 3 and getting heavy, but seems dumb as a post and is just the biggest fraidy cat... And, she quacks... -

Re: New chicken-lady to the site saying hi
Wed, September 3, 2008 - 4:36 PMI have 3 hens, A barred rock, and 2 Aracuanas. The Barred Rock is just the sweetest bird with people. A very nice and gentle bird... Unless you are a spider. She particularly likes Black widows... She is pet-able and will sit on you lap.
